Chen-clan monk of Quanzhou. Studied under Xuefeng Yicun; a well-known exchange records Xuefeng grabbing hold of him and saying 'The whole universe is a gate of liberation — I grip your hand and pull, yet you will not enter,' to which Hongtan replied 'Reverend, you cannot blame Hongtan for that.' Later, at the invitation of the Min military governor, resided at Anguo monastery in Fuzhou and greatly propagated the teaching there.
