Azi Jinwu 阿字今無

Of the Wan clan of Panyu, born 1633. As a boy he got his father out of prison by shaming the magistrate in the road. At sixteen he went to Tianran Hanshi at Leifeng and was ordained; at seventeen, reading the Platform Sūtra at the passage on Elder Ming, he heard a cat cry, broke into a sweat, and felt the world split open — he went to his master at midnight and answered him with a cat's cry. At twenty-two he was sent on his master's orders out through Shanhaiguan to Qianshan Hanke, who thought him extraordinary and kept him three years. He took Haichuang monastery in Guangzhou in 1662 and held it twelve years, ordaining more than seventeen hundred. He died on the twenty-second of the ninth month, 1681, aged forty-nine.
