Of Zhangpu in Fujian, surname Cai. Orphaned young and raised by his brother, he failed of a career by twenty, met the master Zhenjie, and had himself tonsured at Shishi crag in Changtai. Reading the Changuan Cejin he found 'the ten thousand dharmas return to one' and took it up. In the spring of 1634, aged twenty-four, he came to Feiyin Tongrong at Huangbo, who beat him out of the room at every question — and before long he entered the depths and was made recorder. In 1638, when Feiyin took Jinsu, he served as West Hall and received the robe and whisk. He held Jinsu for six years from 1648, spending the whole of his private means on the assembly. In 1662 he copied out a hundred more leaves of dharma-talk into his complete record and said: 'From today this mountain monk will preach no more.' Told by a physician to take medicine, he answered: 'My karmic term is done; medicine is useless.' He washed, changed his robe, and died. His stupa is at Mt. Dengwei near Wu.
