School: Caodong | 1610–1665 | Teacher: Ruibai Mingxue | Students: Hansong Zhicao

From Tongbai in Nanyang, lay surname Gu, born 1610. He asked at ten, hearing a neighbour weep, 'everyone dies — what then?' He married at nineteen and left home anyway, was tonsured at Daolin monastery in 1630 and took full precepts at Baoguo the next year. A monk from the south told him 'you will never settle birth-and-death this way — there is a Chan road', so he went: Jiuhua, the southern sea, Fujian and Yue. He came to Ruibai Mingxue at Bianshan, was struck, and awakened at the sound of the bell during a seven-day sitting. He held Zhaoqing, Longfu, Longhua, Nengren, Yunmen Xiansheng, Foguang, Shanquan and Shanqing. He died in 1665, aged fifty-six. Forty-two heirs are recorded.
