Fayan-school master of Baoci in Jinling, a native of Hangzhou (陸 clan). He had made an elaborate sectioned commentary on the Surangama Sutra; when he presented it, Fayan Wenyi asked what the 'eight returns' return to, and at the second question he was struck dumb — the encounter that turned him from scholarship to Chan.
