Baofang Jin 寶芳進

School: Linji | d. 1519 | Teacher: Yifeng Ning | Students: Yeweng Xiao

The twenty-fifth generation of Linji, resident on Mount Tianmu. He came to consult YIFENG NING of Dagang, the twenty-fourth generation, who esteemed him as a vessel of the dharma and conferred a verse on him: 'Patriarch after patriarch has no dharma to hand on; every man has it of himself. You receive the dharma of no-handing-on — quickly now, pass it to those who come after.' Ascending the hall, he said: 'Holding up a flower and smiling — that is growing a branch off the side of the trunk. Facing a wall and settling the mind — that is painting legs on a snake. Here with me there is no Chan to practise and no Way to study; I simply make each one of you into a buddha and a patriarch straight off. Do you trust that far?' Then, after a long silence, he slapped his knee: 'The sword is named Juque; the jade comes out of Kungang.' His heir was Yeweng Zhenxiao, and through Yeweng the line runs to Wuqu Rukong and Wuhuan Xingchong.
