Of the Zhu clan of Siming (Mingzhou). He was a full monk while still young and had mastered Tiantai doctrine when he changed his robes and went to Xuedou Mingjue, who sized him up and sneered: 'A lecture-hall abbot.' Stung, he went down the mountain, bowed back toward Xuedou and swore: 'If in this life my Chan does not surpass Xuedou, I will never go home.' He went to Letan and sat twelve years with the doubt unbroken; hearing that Yangqi Fanghui had moved to Yun'gai and could handle students, he went straight there, and before a word was finished the mind-seal was clear. After Yangqi died he studied on with his fellow-student Baiyun Shouduan. He held Baoning twice and died there. No dates survive in any source.
