A dharma heir of Linji Yixuan who held Baoshou cloister in Zhenzhou. The lamp records group him with Xinghua Cunjiang, Sansheng Huiran, Dajue and Guanxi Zhixian — Linji's inner circle. Zhaozhou came to see him and he sat with his back turned; his exchange with the tinker Hu ('Can you nail down empty space?' — 'Then smash it open for me, Reverend!' — and Baoshou hit him) is among the best-known Linji-school encounters. His heir was Xiyuan Siming; a second-generation Baoshou, whose name is lost, succeeded him.
