Changlu Zongze 長蘆宗賾

School: Yunmen | 1053–1107 | Teacher: Changlu Yingfu

真州長蘆宗賾慈覺禪師, lay surname 孫 of Xiangyang; 12th generation below Huineng and the 7th of the Yunmen line. Raised on Confucian studies, he left home at twenty-nine under Faxiu at Changlu si in Zhenzhou and took dharma transmission from Guangzhao Yingfu, succeeding him at Changlu. He held Chan practice and Pure Land aspiration together: in 1089 he founded the 蓮華勝會 lotus assembly on the model of Lushan's White Lotus society, urging universal buddha-name recitation. In 1103, as abbot of Hongji chan cloister in Zhending, he compiled the 禪苑清規 in ten juan — the earliest extant Chan monastic code and the foundation of all later ones. He also wrote the 坐禪箴, the 葦江集 and a 勸孝文 in 120 sections.
