From Xinhua county, Baoqing prefecture (Hunan), lay surname Deng, born 1636. Tonsured at seventeen, he roamed with his master; reading Huangbo's Essentials of Mind set him going. He took the precepts from Qushan and later went to the Venerable Lüluo. He received the transmission from Hengxiu Falin in 1670 and held Mituo, Yuanming and Baojue in Yunnan. He returned to the Lüluo stupa-cloister ill in his last years and died in 1685, aged fifty, after thirty-two years in robes; his stupa stands to the left of the old man's.
