Of the Chen (陳) family of Piling (Changzhou), born on the twenty-second of the first month of 1604. In the autumn of 1625 he entered Changsheng hermitage in Jingjiang county and took the robe from the Chan master Duzhi; a month later he went to Miyun Yuanwu at Jinsu and worked under him for seven years. In the spring of 1631 he went with Miyun to Ayuwang, and at the words 'the flesh of the self is not used up' he saw into his own matter. He held nine seats in all and swore never to hand the dharma on lightly to anyone. He died at Mt. Qingyun on the eighth of the tenth month of 1648, aged 45, with 23 years in robes and 16 years teaching; his stupa was raised at Xitang on Mt. Gonggong in Qianzhou.
