From Dazhou in Shu (surname Hu), tonsured at thirteen and set on pilgrimage at twenty. He first met Miyun Yuanwu at Jinsu — asked about his face before his parents were born, he took the stick and felt at ease — then Shiche Tongsheng, under whom a 'not mind, not Buddha, not a thing: what is it?' and a thunderous shout stripped him. He finally received the seal from Wanru Tongwei at Longchi in 1652. He held eleven monasteries across the north — Tianjin, Xiongxian, Zhuozhou, Tanzhe in the Western Hills, and Zhongpan on Mount Pan — and died on the 10th of the 8th month of 1673, aged 72; his stupa is under Zigai peak.
