Dadian Baotong (732-824) was a Tang Chan master of Mt. Ling in Chaozhou (Guangdong), a dharma-heir of Shitou Xiqian. He and Yaoshan Weiyan both first studied under Huizhao at Xishan before Dadian went to Shitou and awakened to the essential purport. After five years on Mt. Luofu he returned to Chaozhou and founded the Lingshan Chan cloister. When Han Yu was banished to Chaozhou in 819 after his notorious memorial against the Buddha-relic, he struck up a friendship with Dadian — the encounter in which, asked his age, Dadian simply held up his rosary.
