Daning Daokuan was a Northern Song Linji master of Daning in Longxing prefecture (modern Nanchang), a dharma-heir of Shishuang Chuyuan (Ciming). Taking up his staff in the hall he declared that 'the life of the Buddhas before and the discipline of the Buddhas after are all right here'; asked why the temple director's eyebrows fell out when Danxia burned the wooden Buddha, he answered, 'Thieves don't rob a poor man's house.'
