Zhangyi Daoqin was a Five-Dynasties Chan master from Taiyuan, a dharma-heir of Fayan Wenyi and thus a ninth-generation descendant of Qingyuan Xingsi in the Fayan school. He first taught at Qixian on Mt. Lu, and was then invited by Li Jing, the Southern Tang ruler, to head the Zhangyi cloister on Mt. Zhong at Jinling. His teaching insisted the Way is not far off: 'Encounter any matter and it is real — is the sacred far away? Embody it and it is numinous.'
