Dawei Fabao 大溈法寶禪師

School: Linji | Teacher: Dahui Zonggao

Dawei Fabao was a Southern Song Linji/Yangqi master from Fuzhou, a dharma-heir of Dahui Zonggao and seventeenth generation below Huineng, who taught at Mt. Dawei. He is remembered for a vivid restatement of Dahui's bamboo-stick dilemma and for the image that became his signature: 'Be a lion that bites the man — don't be like the Han hound chasing the clod', i.e. go for the one who threw it, not the thing thrown.
