Deng Yinfeng was a Tang Chan master of Mt. Wutai, a native of Shaowu surnamed Deng, said to have seemed dull as a child. He first studied with Mazu Daoyi, twice went off to test himself against Shitou Xiqian and twice came away beaten — prompting Mazu's famous warning that 'Shitou's road is slippery' — before finally receiving Mazu's seal of mind. He is one of the great eccentrics of the Hongzhou school, remembered in legend for pushing a wheelbarrow over Mazu's outstretched leg and for dying standing on his head.
