Dengjue Puming was a Song Chan master of Dengjue cloister in Fuzhou, a dharma-heir of Jianfu Daoying of Raozhou. At his inauguration sermon he struck the block and simply looked at the assembly: 'How marvellous! How wondrous! Can any of you see it?' He warned that even reaching that point one still falls into the courtyard of expedient teaching — not yet the monk's one direct road.
