Zhongdu was a Five-Dynasties Chan master of Dengzhou, a dharma-heir of Luopu Yuan'an in the Shitou (Qingyuan) line. Little of his teaching survives beyond a couplet of the wooden-man type beloved of the Caodong-influenced lineages: 'The wooden man is forever answering back; possessed of nature, yet unable to speak.'
