Dongshan Daoquan 洞山道全禪師

School: Caodong | d. 894 | Teacher: Dongshan Liangjie

Dongshan Daoquan (d. 894) was a Tang Caodong master from Changzhou surnamed Xuan, a dharma-heir of Dongshan Liangjie. Asking his teacher for the essential of escape, he was told 'Smoke is rising under your feet, Reverend' — and awakened on the spot, never wandering again. When Liangjie died the assembly asked him to succeed to the abbacy. In 893 Minister Dai invited him to head the Long'an cloister, and he died the following year; he was posthumously titled Chan Master Zhengzhen.
