Dongsi Ruhui (744-823) was a Tang Chan master from Qujiang in Shixing, a dharma-heir of Mazu Daoyi. After first visiting Jingshan Daoqin he studied under Mazu; his assembly grew so large that the benches in the monks' hall gave way, earning him the nickname 'Huì Who Broke the Benches'. Installed at Dongsi in Changsha, his gate flourished so that it was called 'the Chan grotto of Dongsi'. After Mazu's death he grew impatient with disciples endlessly reciting 'this very mind is Buddha', and countered with the challenge: 'Mind is not Buddha; knowing is not the Way.'
