Duanya Liaoyi (1263-1334) was a Yuan-dynasty Linji/Yangqi master of West Mt. Tianmu near Hangzhou, born in Deqing surnamed Yang. As a boy he recited the Lotus Sutra with his mother; at seventeen he took the tonsure under Gaofeng Yuanmiao, whose dharma he inherited, becoming a dharma-brother of the famous Zhongfeng Mingben. In 1326 he took charge of Zhengzong temple on Mt. Tianmu. His signature phrase for awakening is 'revived after being utterly cut off — like cold ashes bursting into flame, like a withered tree blooming again.'
