Of the Ge clan of Tanyang. Feeding monks at Jingci in Hangzhou one day, he happened to open the Platform Sutra and it came to him as something long familiar. When Fojian was ordered to take Jingshan, he and Tianjie Ri went together to study there and got the essentials. He then went to Duanqiao Miaolun and worked at it hard, asking for instruction eleven times; sitting bolt upright one evening he suddenly saw the lamplight in front of him and broke open. He came out as abbot of Ruiyan in Taizhou. He died on the seventh day of the first month of the first year of Zhiyuan. His heirs included Wujian Xiandu, Jingtang Gu and Yiyuan Ling.
