Northern Song Chan master, titled Foyin, of Zhihai monastery in the Eastern Capital (Kaifeng). A native of Tong'an in Quanzhou, surname Ye, he was a bright and widely-read Confucian student in youth; before he came of age he turned to the teaching of emptiness and left home under Huiru of Luyuan monastery. He travelled widely and clarified the mind-ground only in Yuanyou's assembly, becoming his heir. He first came forth at Wuzu, where his reputation grew, and was then summoned by edict to Zhihai; on his opening day Emperor Zhezong sent a palace envoy to offer incense.
