Fuyan Baozong was a Northern Song Linji master of the Fuyan cloister on Mt. Nanyue, a dharma-heir of Shishuang Fayong. His surviving sermon is a piece of cheerful iconoclasm at the expense of the tradition's own heroes: the Sixth Patriarch's transmission of the robe through six generations was 'angling for a petty profit'; Mazu's shout in Jiangxi 'did not know how to guard the beginning'; Deshan's whole display 'did not know how to guard the end.'
