Of the Li 李 family of Changsha in Huguang. Tonsured on Mount Emei at six, he served twelve years at Shuanggui — Poshan Haiming's monastery — before his own awakening. Dharma heir of Yusong Chuanyi. He carried the Linji line to Shengjing/Fengtian (Mukden), the northernmost Chan seat in this batch: at his installation a monk asked 'whose tune do you sing, whose house do you succeed?' and he answered 'not before Maitreya, not after Sakyamuni' — and when the monk pressed, 'then you got the seal at Emei and now spread it wide beyond the passes', he said 'you flatter me to death'. Born 1623; he sat down and died in the night of the sixteenth of the eleventh month of 1695, aged 73.
