Born Chen Guobin at Gaoyang village in Ou'ning county, Jianning prefecture, on the fourth of the tenth month, 1614. He resolved on leaving the world at sixteen and was shaved by Ticong of Huangyan. Reading Zhongfeng's admonitions he felt something come clear; reading the Chuandeng lu he hit Zhaozhou's 'cotton shirt of Qingzhou' like an iron wall and could not get past it. He called first on Juelang Daosheng, then went to Miyun Yuanwu at Tiantong — and one word from him settled it. He served eight autumns at Miyun's side before taking a hut of his own. He held Cuiyan at Hongdu, then Huangyan, Baifa, and Foding in Jianzhou.
