Haizhou Puci 海舟普慈

School: Linji | 1355–1450 | Teacher: Wanfeng Shiwei | Students: Baofeng Mingxuan

A man of Changshu (Haiyu) in Suzhou, of the Qian clan. He came to WANFENG SHIWEI and asked after the real meaning, and awakened under Wanfeng's staff; he served as HEAD MONK (首座) in Wanfeng's assembly and taught from a divided seat. Wanfeng sent him a verse of entrustment — 'Tortoise-hair I hand over to my children and grandchildren; rabbit-horns I pick up and ask the ford of…' — and Shen Guan, the vice-prefect of Hai'an, who studied under him and later composed WANFENG'S OWN STUPA INSCRIPTION, wrote in it that he had 'long studied at the seat of Reverend Haizhou, the master's DHARMA-HEIR DISCIPLE.' When Wanfeng died in 1381 Puci helped compile the recorded sayings, sought the prefaces, and set up the stone of the stupa inscription. Much later, in 1441, he succeeded to the ABBACY of Dongming as its second-generation abbot. He died in 1450, ninety-six years old and seventy-four years a monk.
