Huaihai Yuanzhao 淮海原肇

School: Linji | 1189–1265 | Teacher: Zhewong Ruyan

Of Jinghai in Tongzhou, surname Pan; zi Shengtu, hao Huaihai. Tonsured and ordained at nineteen, he went to Zhewong Ruyan at Jingshan and became his heir. From 1233 he held Guangxiao in Tongzhou, then Shuangta at Wucheng, Qingliang at Jinling, Wannian at Tiantai, Wanshou at Suzhou and Jiangxin at Dongjia. Appointed to Ayuwang as its forty-fifth abbot, he went on to Jingci, Lingyin, and finally Jingshan in Hangzhou — the summit of the Five Mountains system. He fell ill and died on the tenth day of the sixth month, 1265, having written his parting verse.
