Of Fushun county in Sichuan, Gao clan, mother of the Yang clan, the fourth son. By the account of his dharma-brother Jienan Huixian he 'never studied the classics as a boy and could not read' — an illiterate who became an abbot. He was tonsured at twenty-five under Shengke Deyu, took his precepts at Yunfeng and did his Chan at Zhaojue, then came to Huayan monastery in Chongqing, where he and Shengke 'met like needle and mustard-seed' and he served as head monk for fifteen years without a divided thought. In 1684 Shengke left on pilgrimage and Huanchu took the Huayan seat; his opening sermon there in the tenth month of 1684 lights the incense to Shengke. He was fifty-five in 1685.
