Lay surname Xiong, of Qijiang county in Yu (Chongqing). Born at the zi hour on 21/2 of 1605. At thirty, awake to the emptiness and suffering of body and world, he went to Mt Huayin to venerate Samantabhadra, met the master Changbai, and was tonsured and fully ordained by him. Changbai died six months later and he took over the cloister's affairs, resigning after four years to study in Jiangnan. Invited by Liu Sande of Sichuan to Baiyi pavilion on Mt Hu, he went; he later paid respects to Poshan Haiming, travelled to Emei, and sat in seven monasteries in succession discussing the Surangama, Perfect Enlightenment and Diamond sutras. When the dynasty fell in 1644 he hid in Yelang in Sichuan for eight years. In the 9th month of 1653, hearing that Poshan was at Jincheng temple in Liangshan, he went to him, followed him to Shuanggui, and there - the conditions ripe - became his dharma heir. He soon returned to Yuzhou and held Chongyin, then Zhiping, Shibao, Yuantong, Hongfu and Baolian. He died on 18/9 of 1673, aged 69, with 38 dharma-years.
