Daoming of Mount Meng in Yuanzhou, formerly the layman Huiming — a grandson of Emperor Xuan of Chen who had held a fourth-rank general's commission, hence his nickname 'the General'. He trained under the Fifth Patriarch Hongren without breakthrough, then led dozens in pursuit of Huineng to Dayu Ridge; unable to lift the robe from the rock, he awakened instead at 'think neither good nor evil'. Huineng refused to be called his master, declaring them fellow disciples of Huangmei, so the lamp records file him as Hongren's collateral heir; he taught at Mengshan with three heirs of his own.
