Huishan Jiexian 晦山戒顯

School: Linji | 1610–1672 | Teacher: Jude Hongli

Ming-Qing Chan master of the Linji/Yangqi line, styled Yuanyun, also called Huishan and Bawong. A native of Taicang, Jiangsu, surname Wang. After the fall of the Ming he took tonsure and ordination at Huashan in Jinling under the elder Sanmei (三昧老人). He consulted Tiantong and Xuejiao, then awakened to the Yunmen staff koan under Jude Hongli at Lingyin, becoming his heir. He first withdrew to Lushan, then opened the teaching at Yunju for ten years, and later headed Jianfu, the Fourth Patriarch's monastery at Huangmei, Anguo, Hanxi, Huguo and Shushan. In 1667 he succeeded to Lingyin. Died 1672, aged 63. Author of the Chanmen duanlian shuo (禪門鍛鍊說), a celebrated manual on training a Chan assembly.
