Qing-dynasty Linji master, thirty-third generation of the orthodox Linji transmission (傳臨濟正宗三十三世) — so styled by his own heir in open assembly. Heir of 養拙正明 (養拙明), who was himself the heir of 五峰如學 (1583-1631) and who dwelt at 密印寺 on Mt. Dagui 大溈山, dying in the spring of 1649. Zhihai's seat gives him his name, 慧山. His disciple 古梅定冽 attended him for fifteen unbroken years and received the 記莂 (the prediction/certification) from him in the midst of the assembly, and afterwards led the same 大溈山密印寺 / 芙蓉山廣化寺 community. Other recorded heirs: 與峰智, 明應, 揆庵空, 上湛, 月憨權, 千如一. No dates and no stele have been found for him; he is known through his heir's 語錄 and through the Qing lamp-records.
