Song Chan master of Jianfu in Raozhou, a native of Jiangzhou, and a dharma heir of Dahui Zonggao. He followed Dahui from Yunmen in Jiangxi to Xiaoxi in southern Quanzhou; feeling passed over as others received Dahui's seal, he meant to leave, but Dahui told him 'just concentrate on your investigation — if you get something, I will know it before you open your mouth.' Goaded by Dahui's public jibe that 'Attendant Ben has practised for years and can only say I don't understand,' he threw himself into the 'no' of Zhaozhou's dog; one night near the third watch, dozing against a hall pillar, the word 'wu' fell from his lips and he suddenly awakened.
