Lay surname Yang, of Nanchong in Guocheng. He wanted to leave the world from boyhood but his parents refused, so he took up the Diamond Sutra as his practice. Setting out south to study with Bai Zhai, he met Wuzhu, who set him on the 'ten thousand dharmas' koan; he called on Yunce, and then on Poshan Haiming, from whom he received transmission in 1659. He held Fozi temple on Mt Longyin in Pengxi, Guangde cloister in Suining, and Zifu cloister in Xichong. He had twelve heirs. Neither his death-year nor his full lifespan is known; the one fixed point is that in 1660 he was forty-two.
