Jinli Tihui Lu 金粟諦輝輅

School: Linji | 1627–1725 | Teacher: Jude Hongli

雲林諦暉慧輅禪師 (1627–1725), lay surname 沈; also written 諦輝輅. Orphaned at six and with his household ruined by conscription, he left lay life after his mother died and travelled widely before taking transmission from Jude Hongli at Lingyin. He presided at Lingyin and at Jinsu in Yanguan. While at Lingyin he called to a monk doing walking meditation and said 「一動不如一靜」; then, seeing a monk sitting in meditation, called him over and said 「一靜不如一動」— when his attendant asked about forgetting both motion and stillness, he simply lowered his head and returned to the abbot's room. He died in 1725 aged ninety-nine, with seventy-four years in robes.
