Jiqi Hongchu 靈巖弘儲

School: Linji | 1605–1672 | Teacher: Hanyue Fazang | Students: Baochi Xuanzong, Xieyun Jiji, Dayu Xingtao, Neishao Zhizhong, Xiaotang Yunfen, Yi'an Shanzan

Dharma heir of Hanyue Fazang (1574–1635) of Sanfeng, thirty-fifth generation below Nanyue; abbot of Lingyan at Suzhou, and known as Jiqi ('the one who takes up the succession') and Tuiweng. He edited and prefaced his teacher's sixteen-juan record, having been charged with the task by Hanyue himself six months before his death — 'he put it into my unworthy hands to compile', he writes, adding that twenty-seven years later he still shrank from committing it to print. He was the chief figure of the Sanfeng branch after Hanyue, defending it through the Wudeng yantong controversy, and a great teacher of nuns: the Jiaxing catalogue records at least three abbesses as his heirs (寶持玄總, 靈瑞祖揆玄符, and others). He was born on the eighth of the second month of 1605 and died on the twenty-seventh of the ninth month of 1672, aged 67.
