Korean Seon master, fifth patriarch (第五世) of the Susonsa 修禪社 community on Mt. Jogye 曹溪山 (Songgwangsa). Dharma name 天英 (Cheonyeong); lay surname 梁; father 宅椿, mother of the 金 clan. Born 高宗二年乙亥 (1215), sixth month, thirteenth day. Tonsured in 1225 (高宗十二年己丑) at Jogye under 真覺國師 (Jingak, i.e. 慧諶) — a TONSURE (得度), not a transmission. He then consulted 清真國師 (Cheongjin, i.e. 夢如, the 3rd patriarch) and 'received the essentials of the dharma' from 真明國師 (Jinmyeong, i.e. 混元, the 4th patriarch), whom he succeeded in the seat. In 1233 he was made 座元 at a 談禪法會; in 1236 he took first place in the 禪選. Appointed 三重大師 and then 禪師 by the 晉陽公, he was installed at 斷俗寺 (1248) and presided at 昌福寺 (1249). He held the seat at Jogye for thirty years. He died aged 72 (法臘 57) and was posthumously titled 慈真圓悟國師 — hence 'Wono' 圓悟 — with the stupa-name 靜照. It is under this posthumous 圓悟 that his disciple Manhang's stele calls him 「其師曹溪圓悟和尚」. His own stele stands at 佛臺寺 in 高興郡, composed by 李益培.
