Koho Kennichi 高峰顯日

Japanese Rinzai master, a son of the retired Emperor Go-Saga. On the twenty-sixth of the ninth month of 1281 he went to Kenchō-ji at Kofukusan and received from Mugaku Sogen the kesa that had come down from Enshō (Lanxi Daolong), carried it back to his temple and had the drum sounded to announce it to the assembly. He was the first abbot of Un'gan-ji in Shimotsuke (下野州東山雲巖禪寺). Posthumously Bukkoku Zenji (佛國禪師) and Bukkoku Ōgu Kōsai Kokushi. He died in 1316, aged 76. His heir Musō Soseki became the most influential Zen figure of the Muromachi period.
