Lay name Xu Ji'en (also Xu Shichen) of Qiantang. He passed the mingjing examination and lived as a scholar, only ordaining at about forty-six. Caodong heir of Sanyi Mingyu (1599–1665), himself an heir of Zhanran Yuancheng; thirty-seventh generation below Qingyuan. He was abbot of Ciyun, Fanshou and Xiansheng. A prolific writer, he left the Xuefo kaoxun, the Qiyuan zhitong (a Chan reading of the Zhuangzi) and Yuejing shi'er zhong, besides his eighteen-juan record — a scholar's bibliography as much as a monk's. He was born on the fourth of the tenth month of 1615 and died on the twenty-fourth of the ninth month of 1684, aged 70.
