School: Linji | d. 1117 | Teacher: Huitang Zuxin | Students: Changling Shouzhuo, Wuyin Zijing, Shangfeng Foxin Bencai

A Wuning man of the Chen clan. He became a full monk at seventeen and went to Chan master An of Yan'en, who sent him on to HUITANG ZUXIN at Mt Huanglong. There he kept the assembly's hours but his questions and answers came to nothing — until, having been reading Xuansha's sayings, he grew tired and took a walk; walking fast, HE WALKED OUT OF HIS SANDAL, and stooping to pick it up, HE HAD A GREAT AWAKENING. For ten years he refused abbacies; he finally took Taiping at Shuzhou, then HUANGLONG itself. He was a celebrated letter-writer and a friend of the poet Huang Tingjian and the philosopher Cheng Yi. He died in 1117 and was titled Chan Master Foshou.
