A Changshu man of the Zhang clan, tonsured under Poshan Dongwen. He first studied with Boshan (Wuyi Yuanlai), then met Miyun Yuanwu at Jinsu and became his heir — the thirty-first generation of Linji. He was abbot of Gunan at Meili (hence 'the Reverend of Gunan'), then Qizhen at Siming, Meixi at Jiahe, Jile at Xinghua, and finally TIANTONG, retiring to Helin at Jingkou. A calligrapher and poet, he left the Qihui yulu and the Lanzhai bieji, and had ten dharma heirs. He died in 1671.
