Nanshi Wenxiu 南石文琇

School: Linji | 1345–1418 | Teacher: Xingzhong Zhiren

A Kunshan man of the Li clan, tonsured at Shaolong cloister under Zhixing. He met XINGZHONG ZHIREN at Yunding and received transmission from him. He was abbot in turn of Pumen, Lingyan and Wanshou in Suzhou, and finally of JINGSHAN. Summoned to the capital in the early Yongle era, he took part in the compilation of the Yongle Encyclopaedia. He was himself a lamp-historian: he compiled the Zengji xu chuandeng lu in six juan, besides his own recorded sayings in two juan, for which Yao Guangxiao — the 'Black-Robed Chancellor' of the Yongle court — wrote the preface. He died in 1418, aged 74, with 67 years in robes. His heir was Cuifeng Zongmi.
