Song Chan master of Falun on Mt. Nanyue, a dharma heir of Letan Hongying in the Huanglong branch of Linji. He is known for his 'four shouts' sermon: a shout — 'the lion roars'; a shout — 'the elephant king stretches'; a shout — 'a mad dog chases the clod'; a shout — 'the shrimp cannot leap out of the measure'; and then: 'of these four shouts, one is fit to be teacher to buddhas and ancestors — which?' To a student begging instruction he said 'did you hear the drum just now?' — 'I did.' — 'Then give me back my huatou.'
