Nanyue Lanzan 南嶽懶瓚

School: 北宗 (Northern School — 神秀 → 普寂 line) | Teacher: Songshan Puji

Mingzan, known as Lanzan ('Lazy Can'), an eighth-century recluse who studied under Puji on Mount Song in the Northern School and silently accorded with his mind, then lived idle at Hengyue — while the other monks laboured he stayed at ease, earning his nickname. From the early Tianbao era he did menial work at the Nanyue temple and slept beneath the oxen for twenty years. The chancellor Li Mi sought him out at midnight and was cursed and spat at, then handed half a taro raked from a dung fire, which Li ate kneeling in thanks. He is celebrated for the 'Song of Enjoying the Way'.
