Daolin of Hangzhou (741–824), called the 'Bird's Nest monk' for dwelling in a canopy-like pine on Qinwang shan, and 'Magpie's Nest' for the bird that nested beside him. A native of Fuyang surnamed Pan, he studied Huayan and the Awakening of Faith at Chang'an before meeting Jingshan Daoqin and receiving the dharma in the Oxhead line. He awakened his attendant Huitong by plucking and blowing a tuft of down from his robe, and famously told the poet Bai Juyi that although a three-year-old could recite 'do no evil, practise the good', an eighty-year-old still could not do it.
