From Langzhong (surname Yang, mother Xu), born on the 15th day of the 6th month of 1626. Orphaned at sixteen when his district was overrun, he fled to Hanmian, saw the slaughter, and took tonsure. Hearing that Zhangxue Tongzui was teaching at Jingming, he went to him; Zhangxue asked if he could read, he said no, and was sent into the hall — where one night at the sounding of the watch 'a thunderclap in empty space' shattered the lump in his chest. He followed Zhangxue east to Tiantong and back, served him some twenty years, and was charged by him with the Caotang seat. He was still alive in 1686, aged 61.
