Pingtian Puan 平田普岸

School: Hongzhou | 770–862 | Teacher: Baizhang Huaihai

Tang-dynasty Chan master from Hongzhou who awakened under 百丈懷海. Drawn by the fame of Mount Tiantai, he withdrew there, built a hut, and eventually founded the 平田禪院 (Pingtian Chan Cloister), from which he takes his name. The Wudeng Huiyuan records a celebrated exchange in which 臨濟義玄 visited him. His verse to the assembly begins 「大道虗曠,常一真心」. He died at his own cloister in 862.
