Of the Yue clan of Yongfeng village on the north road of Guozhou (Nanchong), born in 1626. His grandfather Menglong took the jinshi and served the Wanli emperor, was frugal and outspoken at court, and was reckoned a famous minister; the family kept to the Confucian line thereafter. As a boy he did not play, and was as grave as a grown man. He read a book once and put it down, yet could give back its sense in a few words that left old scholars straightening their robes. At seventeen he travelled to Mount Emei and was tonsured, and studied under Huijue Zhaoyi. He went to Yunnan and Guizhou and met the great master Zhizhi, who was sparing with approval but said only 'just so, just so' to him. Returning to Shu he met Huijue again, who likewise assented and handed him the robe and whisk: 'Take good care of it.' He was abbot at Wanshou in Renhuai, Longzhou in Jiading, Foxing in Ziyang, and finally rebuilt Xiangji at Nanchong. He died on the twenty-third day of the first month of 1667, aged 42.
